KTH Architects’ Newest Airport Renovation

One of the more recent renovations designed by KTH Architects is the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe, PA.

This airport was known as J.D. Hill Airport in 1924. In 1995, we at KTH Architects designed the original terminal building. This is when the airport was dedicated to the golf legend, Arnold Palmer. This airport was named after Palmer as he was a local Latrobe native with a very successful golf career.

In 2024, we were approached by McFarland Johnson, who were the airport engineers, to completely redesign the airport terminal for Westmoreland County Airport Authority. This airport renovation was extremely important, as the new expansion was estimated to accommodate over 100,000 passengers per year with ample seating and amenities including, bars, restaurants, and gift shops.

Our team worked on the full architectural design process for this airport renovation, including MEP design services. MEP stands for “mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.” The airport terminal addition is 30,000 square feet, including the addition of three new stories. An important piece of construction was that the airport needed to stay fully functional during the process. KTH Architects helped to carefully phase the project to ensure uninterrupted flight operations.

Another key piece of this project was to adhere to FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) standards. In doing so, this project designed by KTH Architects earned the prestigious PennDot Bureau of Aviation engineering award for its excellence.

We were honored to be chosen for this design, and look forward to working with the McFarland Johnson team in the future.
