Juniata Elementary School

At KTH, we believe that well-designed learning environments have the power to shape student experiences, enhance community pride, and support long-term educational goals. That vision was brought to life through our recent work at Juniata Elementary School in DuBois, Pennsylvania—a comprehensive renovation and addition project that transformed the school’s physical space and functionality from the ground up.

This multi-faceted project included a full-scale renovation of the existing school, the construction of major building additions, and critical site improvements. At the center of the new addition is a competition-sized gymnasium, designed for use not only by Juniata Elementary students, but also by the broader school district. The project also included the strategic infill of an existing courtyard to create new classroom spaces and a modern library—enhancing both the school’s academic resources and capacity.

Another key improvement involved relocating the administrative offices to the building’s main entrance. This not only streamlined access for visitors but also greatly improved security, ensuring a safer environment for students and staff.

The site itself posed its own unique challenges. KTH addressed a variety of complex site concerns, including stormwater management, reconfigured parking areas, and improved circulation for buses, vehicles, and pedestrians. Each of these elements was thoughtfully designed to enhance daily operations and long-term maintenance.

One of the most demanding aspects of this project was coordinating phased construction in an active school setting. With students and faculty on-site throughout the school year, construction needed to be carefully staged to minimize disruption to daily activities. Thanks to KTH’s deep experience in phasing school renovation projects, we were able to maintain a safe, functional learning environment throughout the entire process.

The completed Juniata Elementary School is more than a series of improvements—it’s a reflection of a district’s commitment to its students and a community’s investment in its future. We’re proud to have played a role in bringing that vision to life.
